"...I think a manufacturer should offer him a job"

Yeah, I can really see that happening!, a bidding war the likes of which one only witnesses in Pro sports, with the winner being the company that not only provides the most money and perks, but that also agrees to allow his first amplifier to be badged "Doom", his first speaker system "Gloom".

It's interesting to note how the fellow always falls back on the live music reference, how reproduction equipment fails to meet that lofty standard. This is true of course but, much like his idealized view of engineering practice (outside audio), it neglects the fact that reproduced sound has enormous merit onto itself, merit completely unrelated to whether it will ever obtain the goal of more completely emulating "live" sound.

Reproduced music in the home allows access to an enormous wealth of music that in former times was relatively speaking only accessible to those of wealth and privilege, and in an absolute sense provided levels of access that in a practical terms were impossible regardless of material means.

Hence should I wish be privileged to a superlative performance of one of Beethoven's late String Quartets then in goes a CD, or on goes a LP, and not any mediocre performance, say one by Quartetto Italiano!

And if the selection of certain equipment allows one to connect to a greater extent emotionally, intellectually, etc., with such performances then this, for some, is a pursuit well worth the expense and effort. Again, the fact that the end result doesn't reach the lofty standard of hearing Quartetto Italiano live has little to do with it.
