NOBODY listens to loudspeakers in an anechoic chamber

True, but when you want to measure the loudspeaker and the loudspeaker only, then there's no way around (quasi)-anechoic conditions.

If not in the anechoic chamber, where should the speaker manufacturer test his speakers? If he sets up a real world room, this room will very certainly be different from your room (or anyone else's). The next speaker manufacturer will use a different real world room, so how do you want to compare their measurements? What he/they could do is use a room according to IEC standard, but again, who has a room meeting this standard in his home.

There are speaker designers who do have insight and who do perform measurements, but from reactions during my inquiry I got the impression that it's a small minority. The rest of the lot I would call tinkerers, as you suggest, and would never ever buy speakers from them. And there's lots of highly valued names on that list.
