"The only conclusion I can come to is that measureemnts do not tell the whole story".

That is one possible explanation. The other is that the listener who is telling you that a component sounds good is wrong. I think in practice it's a combination of both but more of the latter.

"First order crossovers generally sound better than more complex ones."

I'm a big fan of preserving the time information in the music system, something virtually no system does very well. But first order crossover have other types of problems in many types of speaker design available commercially. Many times the problems are greater than the benefit.
