Re: Measurements and Listening

One interesting point about Stereophile's reviews and measurements:

Notice how a component may test bad but still sound good - but -
I can't remember a component that tested good and sounded bad!

It seems an almost universal fact that equipment that tests good also sounds good but not the reverse. What do you make of that?

The only conclusion I can come to is that measureemnts do not tell the whole story. This seems especially true in speakers where the very cabinet resonances (or crossover distortion or take your pick) that show up as bad measurements probably contribute to the overall sound in a positive way.

Design is always a series of compromises- if they add up to the + side then you're golden- if they fall to the other than you're not.

That's why I think the fewer pieces that make up a component the better. Two way speakers generally sound better than 3 or 4 ways. First order crossovers generally sound better than more complex ones.
Fewer compromises to make.
