RE: Totally agree...if I love the sound of one of my components...

As you say, it depends on what you like to listen to, and also, perhaps, where your priorities are. I listen to rock, but I'm more interested in getting the best sound from classical recordings than I am in getting the best sound from rock recordings, and the most revealing speakers (and even the moderately revealing ones like Maggies) just aren't going to be the best speakers for most rock recordings because they show up all the glitches in studio technique. As to levels and bass, well, that depends on how far you want to push it, but in my experience the Tympanis can handle anything except the Telarc 1812, if you don't want ear-damaging club levels.
