I don't think its that simple. As a planar owner, I can tell you that its not easy to measure these things. They, and the room they're played in, are effectively a synergistic system. They won't measure well outdoors, or in an anechoic chamber or using the normal techniques that JA seems to employ. The quality of the sound at your ears is very much a function of the equipment, the physical room makeup with room treatments, your seating position and a significant amount of time (weeks to months) needed to tweak both the seating and speaker positions a couple of inches at a time. Seemingly small changes in speaker position, distance from room boundaries, distance to the listening chair, tilt and toe-in can have a profound effect on the resulting sound, including the frequency response at your ears.
The only way to measure them is from the location of your ears in your normal seating position. When set up correctly, which involves a lot more effort than Magnepan will admit to, the frequency response can be very flat with a very, very, wide, tall, deep and very coherent soundstage. Many that dislike Maggies may never have really heard them at their best.
Clearly a magazine measuring a product for general consumer use can not be expected to jump through the hoops necessary to get the best out of them. Two years ago, after almost 4 years of ownership I made my final position tweaks. At my listening position I have a very narrow trough of 6db at around 160hz and a rise of a few db in the upper midrange. Other than that the frequency response is flat within less than 3 db from 40hz to 16khz. But this was a result of over a hundred hours of tweaking over the years!
Maggies, because you can never be too thin!
