I don't get that argument at all. Any competing company could simply buy one take it to their lab and basically reverse engineer the thing. Hell Soundhounds in Victoria sells and repairs Magnepan - they can build them from the ground up as well. These things are not exactly technical marvels from what I gleaned from the repair guy there.
And I don't understand the fear of the measured response. It does not impact the reviewer's buying decisions. How many bloody reviewers own tubes and SETs and don't own Brystons.
Most reviews of well known products and big names are a kind of preaching to the choir anyway. People who love Magnepan will buy Magnepan regardless of the measured results. Besides there is usually some kind of "our measuring technique doesn't do a good job with panels or big speakers" or "Our measured result "may" not be a problem in a different room" blather. Weasel words are almost always the course in measured response commentary anyway: may, if, probably, likely, possibly, unlikely etc.
Most review publications have someone on staff that loves panels so it's pretty much a sure thing that the commentary will be good since most competitors cost a lot more. How many other full ribbon planar speaker makers out there? Competition is what - zero.
I'd make the case that reviewing them is a waste of time.
People who listen to rock trance hip hop anything amplified will likely hate the darn things, and people who like the sound of ribbon tweeters and air and listen to classical will rave about them. I know people who will own nothing else and people that loathe them.
I'd like to see John Marks review them.
I'd like to see someone review them directly against the King Sound Prince II and Gallo 3.5 and put on some Kraftwerk.
