Re: Real life

Since I am not a professional recording engineer I am perhaps not privy to all the techniques used to get things within a reasonable range without compression. I found it possible with my smaller works and piano IS very dynamic. Violin at a couple of meters can still overload the tape easily if I am not careful with the microphone gain. The strad my girlfriend plays right now has unbelieveable acoustic power for such an instrument.

The Prokofiev has some very large crescendos that keep expanding and expanding until you think it will bust (ok not like Mahler but still pretty big). The quiet parts are of course very quiet. Your Quads will handle this just fine...the peaks i am not so sure about (maybe you would get some crowbar protection circuit action?). My Caliper Signatures do this recording very well both at the low end and at the peaks. Also, they get things more tonally correct. This kind of music is where they are at their considerable best.

I will check out the Naim cd, thanks for the tip. Also, check out some of Chesky records a friend has several and I will now look into getting some as I have now heard how good they are.
