Re: Real life

I have recorded my girlfriend now at least dozen times. Most of it is with solo violin but I have done three sessions with violin (a Mozart violin concerto and Britten Violin Concerto with piano replacing orchestra) and piano and two sessions with violin and cello (Ravel duo for violin and cello). The solo violin and violin with cello (recorded farther away) fit just fine within the limits of analog tape (I have a Teac R2R model A6300) or DAT. The violin with piano required a bit of work with mic position and recording level to get it all on DAT without setting the gain too low (thus having problems with the room noise and equipment noise affecting the low level passage clarity) and still getting the peaks under the 0db limit.

It is possible to do big works without compression and with only a stereo pair of mics and get an utterly realistic portrayl of an orchestra making music. I have one (not made by me but I have detailed information on how it was made) that is living proof that it is possible. It sounds truly amazing; however, it is VERY demanding on the hifi system. The system must be able to reach down very low in level and maintain realism AND it must be able to reach big crescendos without making a big homogenized mess of everything.

If you want to hear a bit of what this can sound like then visit www.royerlabs.com and look at their demo cd. They make the ribbon mic that was used to make the recording I am talking about. They have an excerpt from Prokofiev's Romeo and Juliet (the web only has it as MP3 unfortunately) on Track 14a and 14b. You should order the cd so that you get the uncompressed version (costs like $3.50). I have contact with the producer of this recording and so I have the full performance. There are many other very interesting things on there as well like one called "church Jam" I think (also 1 stereo mic with no processing).
