A live trumpet played fortissimo at close range can be painfully loud, yet there is an effortlessness and coherence to the sound. I hear them almost daily. (Other impressively loud instruments, too!)Though I've heard a large number of killer stereo systems (some of which cost nearly as much as my house) and even a couple of horn based systems, all sound strained under similar circumstances.
Actually, I've heard a couple of pro-audio PA setups that could probably do the "efforless" bit, but you have increased coloration to contend with.
