M. Fremer on "Digital disaster", suggestion to Stereophile

Finally read that 1994 piece, which, in the mind of Fremer, still applies today, why else would he put it on his website in 2005.

I wonder if Mikey, all the vinyl expert he is, has ever attempted to examine the technical downsides of vinyl. Vinyl is not flawless, far from that, it's compromises all over the place, both at recording and playback levels. One just needs to read vinyl related papers in JAES like

-On stylus wear and surface noise in phonograph playback systems
-Limiting factors in gramophone reproduction
-Some thoughts on geometric conditions in the cutting and playing of stereodiscs and their influence on the final sound picture
-Stereo disk problems
-Maximum peak velocity capabilities of the disk record
-A study of program-level overloading in phonograph recording
-Stylus mass and reproduction distortion
-Measurement of distortions due to vertical tracking angle error in stereodisk systems
-On tracking and tracing error measurement
-Deformation distortion in disc records
-An experimental study of groove deformation in phonographic records
-Analysis of crosstalk on stereo test records
-Groove echo in lacquer master
-Phase shift characteristics of record cutters and pickups
-Mechanical playback losses and the design of wideband phonograph pickups-A theory of scanning loss in phonographs
-Performance tradeoffs in disk recording
-Groove deformation and distortion in record
-Measurement of FM distortion in phonographs
-On disk-record echo phenomena
-Tonearm geometry and frequency-modulation distortion
-Evaluation of phase shift and group delay in phono cartridges

The papers' titles already indicate that vinyl-city is not in the sunshine all the time. Far from that, very far indeed.

I for one would like to read a comprehensive article, covering all aspects of vinyl recording and playback, published by e.g. Stereophile. May I hereby suggest a series of articles covering the technical aspects of vinyl. Looks like a lot of work, but I think that both writer and reader will have real benefit from such exercise.

The writer should hurry though, since the competent vinyl guys are leaving vinyl-city one by one.
