Re: Worth noting: What did HIGH-END AUDIO cost in the LATE THIRTIES?

The Macintosh gear was doctor and lawyer gear I guess as it took some some green to enter that club (still does), but many good people certaily discovered the qualtiy Citation products and many considered the Fisher products to be excellent in their day. Klipshcorn? Cornwalls were very musical as I recall. I remember hearing some large 2-way Altecs with 15"s and the compression horn. I have heard more than one dealer say that for the average customer you almost never have too much bass. I certainly enjoyed my Fisher 500TX in the 70's. The Bozak Concert Grands my first great dealer had at a demo at a Jr. College auditorium with 3-stereo pairs across the stage powered by a stack of Phase Linear amps was pretty amazing. I know this was not high end as we know it today, but it did show that the scale of the presentation was important and what most of us miss at home.

I look at the number of high quality high end audio manufacturers and more seem to show up everyday. I know it takes more than a pile of money to make the most magic, but the China connection does make it easier for one to "grocery" shopping in the east with a pile of money and stencil your own gear and float it back to the mainland. This may be a bigger long term issue of the high end designer/manufacturers.

I agree that this hobby is more about passion and commitment, financial and emotional. Bose is about convenience.
