Mr. Marks, those bachelors buying stereos they read about in Playboy and Esquire in the 60s and 70s didn't have necesarily have high minded motives either. There always have been and always will be consumers looking for status symbols who know and care little about music, and few of us are absolutely immune to the status syndrome. What high end audio has been missing is a sexy, exciting new technology. Downloading and iPods have revolutionized music listening, but most high end makers have turned up their noses. Sony came up with multichannel SACD and much of the high end embraced it, but with no copying or downloading allowed, it will probably never be more than a niche format. Meanwhile, Bose has happily jumped on the iPod train and continues to make millions. Of course, audiophiles ridicule the success of Bose while at the same time bemoaning the shrinking general interest in their hobby without seeing the connection.
Anyway, keep wrinting your fine columns. Some of your readers really are paying attention.
