Re: Anyone care to argue with Srajan?...

Well, I'm not surprised to hear that members of the "audio community" - i.e., manufacturers, dealers, and their surrogates in the audio press - do not like negative reviews. Actually, I don't much care for bad reviews either.

With Jonathan's thoughtful and succinct (very non-Srajan, thank you!) paragraph,

"I believe it is the responsibility of the reviewer and or magazine to keep open communication with the manufacturer during a review process. If something does not sound right, a manufacturer might have a solution or acknowledge that there is a serious mismatch in the system. If that is the case, why should the reviewer continue on with the review? The manufacturer should have the product picked up and not be subjected to an attack on their product. The reivewer has nothing to lose, while the manufacturer has everything at stake,"

as a preface to my list (above) of reasonable standards for professional audio review, the potential problem of a significant non-synergy is eliminated. So the reviewer is left with the problem of personal preferences, which really is NO problem at all! Just state one's system context and personal preferences upfront, then give one's candid personal appraisal and recommendation, for better or worse, and the reader will take it from there. That's the best possible outcome. Honest, straightforward, and fair to all, including the (all but forgotten by Srajan et al.) reader.

Reiterating previous posts, I loathe the advertiser-funded audio press' growing reliance on the twin red herrings of (1.) potential non-synergy and (2.) personal preferences to justify indiscriminate endorsement of virtually every product that comes their way. Specific reviews aside, the breach of credibility is perhaps most conspicuous in the rampant grade inflation of Stereophile's burgeoning "Recommended Components List."
