Yes, that is a fair point. That would be one of the challenges of any new label - which this clearly is. I doubt they will be like BandCamp and allow anyone to just post music. I imagine they would impose t4heir own filter. If they want to cover more than one genre, they would need to figure out ways to differentiate them - much like when a giant label would buy smaller labels that focused on specific genres.
I see the largest asset of the existing labels to be their back catalogs. Yet they cannot exist on those = they have to constantly introduce new "rubbish" as well.
I see the largest advantage of this new structure to be that the artist still owns their masters, and there doesn't appear to be horrible contracts to sign. In theory a new artist could use this platform to reach a level of public awareness and then simply leave to keep 100% of the royalties and run their own "label" simply by having a website.
That seems to be the explicit message to the artist - as long as you feel that we are providing enough value to you to earn our cut, then it is a win=win. If you don't feel this way, you can leave and do it on your own.
But I could easily be misunderstanding and/or overlooking a lot here - I've never been in the position of trying to make a living as an artist.
