by "expert in the area of analog circuit design", I presume you mean

someone with a track record of well received analog products? By that criteria someone could be an expert analog designer but just not an acclaimed one. I postulate that, in fact, the situation is possibly reversed - if there are no objective measures to guide one to the best sounding equipment how do you "design" anything without those objective goals (beyond the obvious ones)? I contend that an "expert" designer cannot work like that. If truly great sound is only achieved by trying different things then, at that point, you are not designing circuits but designing experiments. So, I would expect this path to be pursued by the less analytical and more dogged person. A true designer would be frustrated by the lack of an objective pathway.

Though you didn't mention four designers by name, one you were thinking of is Rob Watts who has his own DAC IP and consults for Chord. He began his audio career designing analog products for Deltec that were highly acclaimed in the UK but are not well know in this country. Later he became interested in DACs after Philips released the first PDM DAC chip.
