Home Critic's Corner

Discuss a review. Provide constructive feedback. Talk to the industry.

C'mon, Dale.

Claiming you don't know or care about the ethnicity of reviews doesn't alter reality, which is that the reviews you read are written by white guys. Stereophile has published pics of most (if not all) of their reviewers/columnists, 6 Moons has pics of their reviewers, and surely you know guys at TAS like Valin, Robert Greene, Anthony Cordesman and Harley are white, likewise Martin Colloms, Alan Sircom (editor/reviewer at Hifi+), most if not all at Soundstage/Enjoythemusic/PF etc. Show reports also have pics, including pics of reviewers/editors and manufacturers and their reps.

Facts are facts, whether you know them or not. I'd bet if JA and other editors have demographics of their readership minority and female readership would be minuscule, just as white readership of Ebony magazine would be tiny. Do you think that if a young African-American peruses S'phile or TAS (or pretty much any hifi mag) in Barnes and Noble and sees that there is literally no mention of any music they listen to they are likely to be attracted enough to buy the mag?

Since there's no evidence that hifi mags will in fact make any changes to attract minorities/women and young whites, if we live long enough we may see the end of some of those mags when our peers exit. Maybe the hifi biz will eventually start ad campaigns in other publications/websites that minorities/women and young people actually read, dunno.
