RE: Huh?

"There was no market for any number of tweaks before the mags started publicizing them."

No market only because tweaks were something new and only needed to be introduced to the magazine's preexisting demographic (audiophiles). The tweaks were marketed to a preexisting audience. No new audience was drawn to the magazine by the tweak.

"How would anybody know what the market is among hip-hop music lovers for hifi gear if no manufacturers/dealers/exhibitors and the mags have made no attempt to market to them? How'd Beats do?"

Per Wikipedia: "To promote its products, Beats primarily relied on endorsements by pop and hip-hop music performers, including product placement within music videos, and partnering with musicians and other celebrities to develop co-branded products. Beats' use of endorsements by musicians helped the company aggressively target the young adult demographics."

I'm guessing that Beats advertised in print and online urban music magazines/websites, Rolling Stone, MTV, BET and probably fashion magazines. They went to where the target audience/demographic was.
