It may be the fact the pits and transitional edges from pit to land are sharper, and more accurate in a glass base than a plastic one.
Kind of a basic.. built in to the substrait 'jitter' problem being reduced.
But it also may be the mastering.
I would guess a $200 a pop product would get better attention than the standard CD.
As for additional mats. Yeah. the big problem is moving the spindle support down. The laser has only so much wiggle room.
Most players I have owned the support puck is FRICTION only holding it up and in place on the motor spindle.
Sometimes in a used player moving the puck up 'fixes' a failure to play at all.
