Is Stereophile really this obtuse when it comes to audible performance?

That is to say, they're just not getting that high-end audio is supposed to be about audible and discerning performance levels of musicality from a given playback system.

Jim, why would you think for a second that any high-end audio magazine worth its weight would hire you primarily for your physics background?

Like I said before, Jim. This is an audio-only industry where audible performance is paramount. If a reviewer lacks confidence in their listening skills or if a reviewer doesn't think audible performance is paramount, then IMO that reviewer have no business writing articles and reviewing equipment. It's just clanging cymbals and that reviewer is potentially harming mfg'ers and consumers alike from both financial and pleasure perspective if anybody puts any weight on what that reviewer's ears perceive.

Also, I'm curious how and when the publications suddenly thought they needed to become armchair experts with technologies and that the readers needed to look to reviewers for their knowledge of technology.

IMO, that's nothing but a smoke screen for high-end publications and reviewers who lost sight (or never had it) of their primary reason for existing in the first place.
