You make it sound like I'm trying to defend them. Why? You asked me to explain their thinking--so that's what I tried to do. The bit about not caring what audiophiles think--you think I approve of that? I don't--I'm just explaining to you what, IMO, is going through their minds.

Please consider: If I tried to explain as you requested, and all I had to offer was a bullshit explanation, then I would be saying implicitly that their thinking is bullshit. But these are smart, serious people. Maybe this is what separates us: You, and others, are willing to proclaim that these smart, serious people you disagree with are either stupid or evil. I find that implausible.
