Please see long time technical contributor to Hi-Fi News, Jim LeSurf's explanation at the link below. It is rather lengthy and the last page (of 3 long ones) looks at alternatives. He notes that if you really want to complicate things by using "bit stacking" to hide high-frequency information that this is quite easily done using 48/24 files. Note that this is what MQA does, but wastes much of the bit stream on DRM, watermarking, and other proprietary closed system junk that is only designed to keep the system closed.
Other studies have been published by researchers and show that *at best* MQA achieves 96/17 resolution (and in many cases lower), and that an ordinary FLAC file of 96/18 would not only have higher resolution, but also be slightly smaller than MQA and not require any special equipment. Anything that can play 96/24 FLAC can easily play 96/18 FLAC also.
As an aside, ALAC files are not as efficient as FLAC files, but only by a few percent. They are based on the same types of predictive algorithms developed by the late Michael Gerzon. Apple just wanted to create an artificially closed "ecosystem" to force Apple users to purchase Apple everythings. They were halted - not by the corrupt US Justice Department, but instead by the European one. Now ALAC is open source, and Apple is finally admitting defeat - iOS 11 supports FLAC, and this is expected to spread to other Apple products, much as Apple finally gave up on Firewire and is now equipping their products with USB 3.1, where the connector is small enough for mobile phones, but fast enough for the most powerful of desktops, and can deliver up to 100 watts (!) to peripheral devices, plus the connector is reversible so it is impossible to insert upside-down. And to top it off, all USB standards are completely open-source and royalty-free.
