Great points. I do believe that designers become emotionally invested....

...in certain technologies, in addition to being financially invested in them.

I am now of the opinion that Ayre DACs, as well as any others that are not MQA compatible, are the Beta VCRs of this century. They may sound better - I really am the last person to be able to judge that - but the MQA train has pulled out of the station and they are not on it.

I will tell you who is on it, and who is getting on it. And that is the record companies, because it is one more opportunity to sell the back catalog in another format. The financial potential for them is great. And DAC and player manufacturers are on it as well, because it is something new and hot, and they don't want to be left in the station with Mr. Hansen.

Now will it end like SACD and become a niche product? Or end like Elcassette or MD in total failure? None of us can have any idea at this juncture. But if the model hews to the Beta vs VHS model the game is already over and non-MQA players will be relegated to doorstop status.

I don't think that the discussion around sound quality has any value at all; the factors surrounding the adoption of this technology are much more in the realm of marketing. And Mr. Hansen's Quixotic protestations will still not allow him to stop that train with his bare hands.
