Actually on Speaker Measurements

Hi John and maybe Charles,

It's an interesting topic as I have been measuring speakers at NRC since 2000. Over the years, I've watched that correlation -- oftentimes when you see some funny wrinkle in the impedance curve, you can find it in other measurements. And, yes, oftentimes it appears to be related to some resonance.

However, I'm not sure how well it correlates with cabinet-wall resonances -- or how strong or at what frequencies they have to be. Take Harbeth, for example. We measured their 30 about 8 years ago and it's impedance curve is pretty wrinkle-free, despite having walls that really resonate like hell at certain frequencies.

That said, I measure, I read, I decipher, but I'd defer to the true experts on this one as they're probably dealing with this all the time. Charles started Avalon, so he'd know. Jack O'Clee Brown, Laurence Dickie, Andrew Jones, Paul Barton would be the guys I'd ask to see what kind of resonances and how strong they'd need to be to have an effect on impedance.
