If you don't mind a DSP in line with your system, you can get a perfect step response with nearly any speakers using something like a MiniDSP 2x4HD (or other more expensive brand units with the FIR EQ function).
In the past, I've mulled over the possibility of just correcting for the phase shift of the passive crossover using an all-pass filter, rather than the more heavy-handed approach of impulse response correction. Have you ever tried something like that?
