A real-world parable; there was once a winery up on a mountain in Cupertino named Ridge that hosted a party to show appreciation for it's most devoted customers. They called it "Day in the Vineyard". and held in the late Spring. At first, the small group of invited guests were invited to assist in pruning vines. But the customer response was overwhelming, the invite list got progressively larger, and it became no longer feasible to allow customers to prune the vines. So the former light picnic morphed into a catered cook-out and wine was given away as door prizes at the end. But the customers wishing to attend kept growing and it became impossible for so many vehicles to ascend the narrow mountain road and park so accommodations in the form of shuttle busses from designated parking lots had to be made and the date had to be moved back to mid-summer when temps were often sweltering and other logistical concerns needed to be addressed. Customers started to grumble about the good old days and that the party had become a bit boring and meaningless. A Japanese conglomerate bought the winery and a new board of directors had no tolerance for unnecessary headaches and expense. The Day in the Vineyard was eliminated. Customers still talk about the good old days when the party was small and meaningful and it was an honor to be invited. No one much misses the mess it had become just before being eliminated.
