I would agree that there would be little reason for JV to sell the cables himself. In the words of Richard Nixon, it is important to have "plausible deniability". There is clearly no way to prove or disprove either story.
Mike Kuller was similarly reluctant to acknowledge that some (not all) of his former co-workers/employers were corrupt, but eventually enough evidence piled up that he changed his mind. Again the problem becomes difficult when truth and lies are mixed. How is one supposed to cipher it out? It seems there are only three logical possibilities:
1) Accept everything written at face value and that everything printed is true and accurate.
2) Accept that it is more work than it is worth to try and tells true from false and abandon the source altogether.
3) Try to figure out which of the articles is biased and/or inaccurate and which are trustworthy.
Choice #3 doesn't sound like much fun to me. Life's too short to live in a constant state of suspicion.
All it takes is to find one single instance of something that you know from your own personal experience to be untrue to discard choice #1. Naturally reasonable people will often reach different conclusions, based on their priorities and experiences, so we can't just disregard something simply because they don't have the same opinion. I am speaking of something far more more egregious.
For example, have you ever heard MQA? If so, did you find it to "deliver far better sound quality than that of any previous analog or digital technology, including 192kHz/24-bit and quad-rate DSD."? That is a pretty bold statement by RH. Better than a 30 ips 1/2" half-track stereo master tape. Better than any vinyl rig at any price. Better than quad-rate DSD. And not just a little bit better, but FAR better?
Or have we already stopped at choice #2?
Cheers,
Charles Hansen
