There has bee a lot of "review inflation" over the years. When JGH ran Stereophile, there were only a handful of products in each category. If something better came along, the previous product would either be demoted or displaced altogether.
That approach has limitations. But overall it kept things pretty interesting. When almost everything gets a great review it's a bit more bland. YMMV.
