Home Critic's Corner

Discuss a review. Provide constructive feedback. Talk to the industry.

The conflict of interest is obvious and without question

Of all the magazines which are in part financed by advertising and review consumer products, their own advertisers' among them, Wine Spectator Magazine goes to extreme lengths of double blind testing to maintain their readers' confidence in the impartiality of their evaluations. Even so, many of their own readers and non readers alike disagree with their opinions. Therefore, why should anyone lend credibility to a magazine which unabashedly tests products of its advertisers without such tests, often giving them such glowing reports that they are difficult to distiguish from the ads themselves? Of course you can challenge the reviewers but why bother. Their arrogance and defensiveness belie their own awareness of their intellectual dishonesty. I for one put no credence in any of it completely ignoring the reviews when making my own judgements.
