Home Classical Court

From Perotin to Prokofiev (and beyond), performed by Caruso to Khatia, it's all here.

IMHO, that opening harp part in Tzigane is not so easy

Or at least that's what I say based on playing the harp part on the piano. It's got all sorts of rhythmic divisions with irrational numbers of notes - and it's even worse if you try to adjust your part to stay with the violinist (who is mostly playing tremolos in that section). The last few times I've played this piece, it has actually been easier for the violinist to adjust to my tempo (which will be very close to a previously agreed upon tempo) - that of course does not mean that you're free to play out of rhythm though! ;-) What the violinist and I do is: we both decide on a metronome mark and both practice at that tempo (enforced by the metronome) before we meet again - it's worked out well. In effect, we're both playing it very strictly, although the way Ravel wrote it makes it sound (paradoxically) like it's very free. Of course, that work is a showpiece and a challenge for the solo violinist - but the piano reduction has some devilish spots for the pianist too.
