. . .but then my ennui intervened and my temptation passed. I don't know any Casals performances at all.
However, I did download the Karabits/Sk Weimar Strauss album on Audite, but I wasn't too taken with it. There's a reduced number of strings in the orchestra on this recording, and the curtailed forces can't summon up the tonal reserves needed for a proper Richard Strauss musical soundscape. I was going to post about it, but then my ennui once again got the better of me! ;-)
For the Beethoven Late Quartets, I have the Auryn Quartet (Tacet MCh DVD-Audio), the Prazak Quartet (Praga partly-MCh SACD, and their earlier Nova Era CD recordings - 13, 14 and 15 anyway), the Smetana Quartet (their earlier analog version now on Supraphon CD's), the Bartok Quartet (Hungaroton CD's), the Hollywood Quartet (Testament CD's), as well as miscellaneous performances of individual quartets. Like you, I had the Quartetto Italiano recordings on LP - beautiful individual and collective tone quality. (I always think of Harris Goldsmith's phrase about them: "the Stokowski of chamber music"!) But I like all the ones I currently have too.
