RE: best Beethoven symphonies set

Tastes do differ although your descriptions are not far off. Except for one point: I don't know many who think Karajan 77 sounds better than 63. The earlier one has more natural sound. The 77 one is more upfront, brasher, and harsher. I grew up with the 77 one and really liked its performances, but wish it were recorded more like 63.

As a rule of thumb, I would say the later the Karajan recording the more it strayed from a natural acoustic and moved to a blended, multi-miked sound that works more poorly the better your stereo system.
