RE: Digital for Classic Audio nerds

I mostly listen to classical. If you're willing to go to $2k, I'd suggest a Lampizator Amber II (which I own and love). I think you can get it for that although it might be borderline now.

If you want to spend (significantly) less, then a Musical Paradise MP-D2 MK2. This unit has the advantages of a choice of DAC chips, output coupling caps and tubes, the latter two of which can be easily swapped out by the user. I would recommend copper foil caps (Jupiter preferably, or Audyn: Duelund is extremely pricey) for the most natural tonality (violins come closest to sounding like violins).
