the only time (once, in over 100 concerts) was a couple of years after 9-11 in NYC. It was played by the NY Phil prior to a concert that featured John Adam's "On the Transmigration of Souls" (which is a sort of tribute/outrage piece specifically about the attacks). So, the whole thing was a kind of memorial service, with a patriotic/political slant (of course, NY was ground zero, so this is kind of exceptional). With all due respect to the orchestras that play the Ukraine anthem -- their hearts are in the right place -- I don't think it matters. In the same way that I feel that a classical concert should be a "refuge" outside of politics, I also feel that there is a more serious counter argument that war is SERIOUS, and should not be trivialized by the whims of concert managers who think or believe that a couple of minutes of "support" through the playing of some music means anything. I just can't help but feel that this type of token effort is more about image or moral posturing than it is about genuinely helping. Perhaps if it were accompanied by "all proceeds from tonight's performance will be donated to the Ukrainian war effort" or something like that I would be relieved of this "political" feeling. But, of course, then the concert would be BILLED as being about the war effort (part of the programming), and I would be relieved of the political hesitation I have by definition ...similar to Jim Treanor's "politics is structural" example in another post below.
