Home Classical Court

From Perotin to Prokofiev (and beyond), performed by Caruso to Khatia, it's all here.

Yeah, but when is new "too new"?...

The core of the season still looks like the same old, same old. Dvorak, Beethoven, Mahler, Mozart, Rachmaninoff. There are some new works, but they are premieres or NYPO commissions that cannot be heard in advance of the programs. New shouldn't be obscure -- not at these ticket prices, at least!:-)

I'm also not that pleased with the more compelling offerings (to me). Some examples (JUST HAVING SOME FUN HERE):

Hillary Hahn (Yay!)...in Barber (Boo, almost a cliche!)

Emannuel Ax (NY seems determined to keep the gates open for the surviving members of the Kosher Nostra until all of the corned beef rots!:-)

Yo-Yo Ma will make an appearance...just because.

Dudamel will be in NY (doing Schumann) -- Who needs Dudamel to do Schumann? Or, anyone at this point (I forgot to list Schumann as Same Old above!:-)

Hoach Zhang will be here (channeling his inner Lang Lang...it's a bird, it's a plane, it's the...soloist):

There's a Sondheim concert, but who cares?

Gautier Capucon (Yay!) will play Qigang Chen "Reflet d'un temps disparu, for cello and orchestra". There is a recording of this piece on Erato played by Yo-Yo Ma that I've heard. The audience will get some Zzzzz's during this piece.

OK, enough doubt. How about some highlights (sorta):

Blomstedt came to town (he's a phenomenon, and I would have liked to have seen him, but this was a few weels ago). But, the concert was Beethoven 5th and Nielsen "Inextinguishable" -- both of which I've seen several times live, and both of which I would have liked to see Blomstedt conduct, say, 30 years ago -- oh, wait, I DID!!!! Just kidding!:-)

Beatrice Rana will be in NY (Yay!) playing Tchaikovsky #1 (Boo!) accompanied by the Shostakovich 5th (A Big Boo for Chris here!:-). Pretty sure I also saw Shostakovich Symphonies 7 and 12 on the schedule so, Chris, think about a Caribbean vacation this year instead of the Big Apple!:-)

"Jurassic Park In Concert" -- More dinosaurs on stage, or in the audience?

Yuja Wang will play Lindberg Piano Concerto #3 (Lindberg was composer in residence in NY for a while, so there is that "chummy element" at work here...with no recordings to hear, I don't know the work -- but, Lindberg can be interesting for a change-up). That said, if anyone can breath life into a work, it is Yuja Wang, so (perhaps) it is worth it. Wait -- the concert is paired with Beethoven Symphony 2 (Beethoven as an antacid???).

Anyway, then it's Christmas, and it becomes time for the Handel Messiah and Nutcracker parade.

Now, I am yawn and gone!:-)

P.S. -- Did you notice that I didn't mention Zweden anywhere here? It is genuinely not clear what influence he has had on this NY Phil. programming.

P.P.S. -- (BEGIN SARCASM) I cannot help but to imagine that the current decision-making process at the NY Phil. is a sort of "Woke Wake" in which the very ancient traditionalists sit at a big table opposite an overly youthful, body-art bedazzled, non-binary, non-racial, non-human (sorry!:-) group of...posers. That's funny, um, isn't it? (END SARCASM).
