So, I listened to several recordings...

I think I like the Bychkov best...available for streaming. Best mix of modern sound quality and performance for me.

That said, I'm not sure why the Franck Symphony was so popular back in the day. Comparable to Beethoven's Fifth in popularity? I just can't get there.

My thought is that the audiences were burned out on Beethoven (even nearly 100 years ago!:-), and were increasingly enamored with film score music, which the Franck can resemble at points (yes, Wagner Lite also).
