I missed out on Amazon's crazy low price for the Szell box set -- about $120 for the 106 CD set. It was already on backorder by the time I ordered. A couple of months later, Amazon finally told me that it was sold out and they couldn't fulfill my order.
So I went on eBay and set up an alert for the Szell set coming up for sale. It was going for high prices, but I eventually found one at a decent price (about $200) from a seller in Germany. I was thoroughly confused when it arrived in an Amazon box and the shipper was Amazon. Then I saw that it came from Amazon Germany. I had to laugh when I realized that the seller simply placed an order at Amazon Germany and had them ship it directly to me! I didn't even think of checking availability at Amazon in Europe. I could have saved money by ordering from amazon.de myself, but I have to hand it to the seller that it was a clever idea. No need to purchase, stock, package, and ship items. Simply sit at the computer and place an Amazon order when an eBay purchase comes through! It also ships out of country and he doesn't have to deal with VAT charges.
I let my eBay alert keep going, and it's been interesting to watch the price change. The Szell box set kept going up until it hit about $1000 during mid pandemic. More recently it's dropped back down to about $500. These are for new, unopened sets. I think people bought multiple sets and hoarded them for speculation. The initial price was so low that there was little risk of losing money on it.
