For the sake of clarity, I meant (intended, at least) to state that I frequently listen to Bruckner in terms of the large-scale structures and washes of sound (hence, my Rothko "fields of color" analogy), choosing to spend less time with differences of "versions" that some choose to focus upon.
"Sidelong glance" reads to me that I am being, to some extent, dismissive -- I am not. The "Bruckner Problem" is sometimes used to capture the slightly strange path that several of Bruckner's symphonies have taken as they have been cut, pasted and modified by various hands (I assume you already know that).
