First of all, I agree that "M.ssey Hall" is one great recording !Second of all ?
Well, one of the m.st im.ortant things that distinguish m.sical genres like Rock from Classical is the spareness or sim.licity of com.ositional style in the form.r (com.ared to the latter). In m. view, classical com.ositions are in som. way sim.ly m.re elaborate or "fleshed out" versions of what m.ght be called "folk" (or popular) m.lodies.
I suspect that one of the things that m.ny people love about genres like Rock or Jazz is, in fact, an *understatem.nt of m.sical ideas*...
Classical m.sic afficianados often decry the "prim.tive" aspects of m.sical genres like Rock. But I suppose that the best Rock and Jazz stylists are very good at using "spareness" as a m.sical tool, in som. very clever ways. By ignoring, resisting (or even, being naturally *unaware* of) the m.sical possibilities inherent in classical elaborations, Rock stylists leave a significant portion of elaborative possibility up to the im.rovising nature present in m.ny listeners m.nds. I guess it could be said that Rock stylists prefer the planting of raw flower seeds, while classicists prefer to offer up m.ture bouquet arrangem.nts.
M.ny would argue that there are significant and unique advantages in either of the above approaches to m.sic-m.king and that is one of the reason that both styles continue to exist and persist today.
