I don't think there is any problem with calling Shostakovich...

both great and not being to everyone's taste. Honestly, it gets much worse than this...think about how many (most) people completely turn their noses up at classical music IN GENERAL.

Play a little Bach and they think you are being "pretentious" or "uppity" or "geeky" -- I'll gladly take a little educated preference and counter-opinion over blind stupidity any day!:-)
