In Reply to: Good point. : ) I'm open to suggestions regarding vocalist today who can inspire almost complete confidence posted by jdaniel@jps.net on December 2, 2021 at 06:45:56:
and I am not completely confident I can do it!:-) Part of this, I think, is that the works themselves - the repertoire - matters a great deal. Puccini is just gorgeous (how about Gheorghiu?). So is Strauss (how about Renee Fleming?). Mozart (Bonney?). French Melodies (Dessay?). American (Upshaw?). Baroque (DiDonato, Bartoli?).
In general...Hvorostovsky, Netrebko?
I will say this...Battle, Te Kanawa, etc. are not "dramatic sopranos" and their repertoire reflects that -- little to no R. Strauss (I like Kiri's 4 Last Songs), Wagner or even Verdi. And, new operas (except those that perhaps try to mimic Broadway) "ain't pretty" so there is no showcase for the new performers.
Hopefully, regarding singers, you have what you need -- I truly believe this type of music (for the beautiful voice) is going away, so the recordings of the greats will need to sustain us.
