If I encounter a passage that's too loud,

I set the volume lower until it sounds OK.
Works with most but not all recordings.
Some just have Glare.
Also, comparing recordings without any knowledge of the Score seems pointless.
Yes, maybe there is one you like better, that's fine.
But does it follow the Score Markings, or just go off on a tangent because the Conductor wants to?
It's hard to know.
I'm sure some Conductors feel they have to have a Personal Take, and not do what many others may already have done.
That can certainly work.
It just depends.
