I only saw him conduct once: at Davies Hall in SF with "his" Concertgebouw Orchestra doing the Mahler 7 many years ago. Surprisingly and shockingly, there were a handful of flubs from the orchestra--a product of unfamiliarity with the hall?
I was at that concert! It was during the problematic early years of Davies Hall (before acoustic renovation) and not surprising if they had some issues with the hall. I recall being struck immediately by the force and strength of the bass in the opening bars, something I hadn't heard from the SFSO under de Waart.
