I get that. It happens to me as well. I hear a work and meh, then I hear it again by another orchestra performer or conductor and the light goes on. After that, it's hard for me to listen to any other performance of that work. I wouldn't say it happens often, and it can be a little discouraging frankly, but it's happened a significant number of times! Some performances just spoil me and click emotionally I guess.
I know nothing at all about reading music or performing.
