Home Classical Court

From Perotin to Prokofiev (and beyond), performed by Caruso to Khatia, it's all here.

I am sceptical until it is proven otherwise.

I doubt very much that Apple has any interest in classical music or indeed of any particular musical genre. There is no way that in a huge corporation the finance side of the business could be persuaded to fund a purchase with an argument based upon musical interest.

I would anticipate that the Primephonic assets will simply be folded into the Apple Music platform. The motivation for such a purchase may simply be that the company was available and Apple bought it basically to stop anyone else. Like film studios buy the rights to almost every novel published without any specific intention to make a film. The object is to block your competitors. This is called warehousing.

I am also remembering HDCD (a way of improving the sound of CD) when Microsoft bought Pacific Microsonics. CD players incorporating HDCD conversion simply vanished from the market. Did MS do anything with their purchase? Not that I am aware of but they did stop any competitor accessing the IP rights of HDCD.

It looks as if the prediction made by Klaus Heymann ( founder of Naxos records) may come true. He, if you remember, ran a classical music only streaming service and found it was not economically viable and had to be closed down. He predicted in an interview in Stereophile that the economics of a streaming service are such that eventually they will only be offered by large corporations who are able to bundle the service as part of their overall offering.

This, BTW, is why I still buy downloads or silver disc copies of music that is important to me. If I rely upon Qobuz or Tidal or whoever being there in five years I am placing a bet with poor odds.
