Home Classical Court

From Perotin to Prokofiev (and beyond), performed by Caruso to Khatia, it's all here.

I read this on Amazon, which you might find interesting as well....

"At the end of his life, Mahler told his wife that his editions of Schumann's Symphonies, which he originally considered to be for his own use as a conductor, were "very valuable," and that she should make sure they were published. She didn't. That should tell us something about Alma, but luckily, these editions survived (Toscanini used the edition of the Fourth Symphony), and we have the complete four works in Mahler's painstaking editions excellently played here by Riccardo Chailly and the Gerwandhausorchester well recorded by Decca. Basically, what Mahler did was to use his ear as a great conductor to make sure these evergreen masterpieces sound as Schumann conceived them through careful balancing of orchestral elements. Szell did much the same thing in his similar versions. Of course, Gardiner and Marriner, with their smaller orchestras do this in different ways, also. Finally, I think that listening to Mahler's view of this music as contrasted with that of others, such as Bernstein, Barenboim, Sawallisch, Levine, and Muti will show us that Schumann was a much better composer for orchestra than was once thought, thus saving him for us. That alone makes Mahler's editions valuable."

Don't know if all that history is true or not, but it is interesting information... I already have a number of complete sets including, Bernstein, Kubelik, Solti, Szell, Eschenbach and Zinman (with Baltimore). I need another set like a hole in the head, but I'm intrigued by what I have heard on YouTube listening to the Rhenish. I may listen to the other 3 before I ultimately decide....
