Home Classical Court

From Perotin to Prokofiev (and beyond), performed by Caruso to Khatia, it's all here.

RE: Yes - it's very good! But does it seem to anyone else that. . .

So looking like you came from an ambassador's reception in 1950 is appropriate? The absurdly outdated costumes worn by orchestras is one of the main reasons why young people think that the whole classical music genre is not for them. Even when I look back decades earlier many people I knew took their clues from what they had seen in movies and TV and did not know what to wear to attend a concert (mostly presuming that it was a black tie affair - not for their class).

Further the RAH in the summer is outrageously hot (even with the new AC). The first person that I have seen properly attired for the environment was Pavel Kolesnikov this week (fab Rachmaninov Paganini variations) who wore a vaguely formal jacket with open necked white shirt, white chinos at short mast, no socks and trainers. Exactly correct.

If classical music is to survive then burn all of those outdated outfits. It isn't an ambassador's party or funeral. Even HM the Queen has abandoned the wearing of archaic morning dress for lounge suits should one happen to be knighted!
