RE: Schiff owns his own bosendorfer

From the album booklet (link below):

The Blüthner no. 762

The historical grand piano played by András Schiff on this recording was built in or around 1859 by the Julius Blüthner company in Leipzig. It is difficult to date the instrument precisely, as the company archives were almost completely destroyed during the Second World War - a great loss to the world of music, for Blüthner was one of the most interesting figures in the history of piano making.

In 1853 Blüthner founded his piano factory, which soon became one of the largest and most significant of its kind in Europe. A brilliant instrument maker and successful entrepreneur, he focused on manufacturing high-quality instruments with a premium finish and left his mark on an entire era. Always intent on a typically romantic 'Blüthner sound', he long resisted the growing standardization in the industry.

With a length of 255cm (8.3 feet), this instrument is the largest model that Blüthner built at that time. Unlike modern grand pianos, the bass strings are straight-strung rather than cross-strung, in keeping with a sound concept that focuses on lucidity rather than mass. As a result, the distinctly singing and powerful tone never sounds thick or ponderous. As is confidently proclaimed on the fallboard, the instrument features the 'Blüthner patent action', this being a form of English double action without repetition lever. It permits an extremely controlled and effortless touch and thus a highly varied tone. The instrument was restored by the Christoph Kern piano workshop of Staufen im Breisgau.
