I hear you, John.
I am a Bartok fanatic, but find it rather painful to listen to his [excellently-performed] recordings because of the narrow frequency and dynamic range. They are fascinating as historical documents (especially the YouTube video some student made of the original field recordings which he transcribed into the Rumanian Dances, link below), but I cannot let down the fifth wall or whatever they call it, and pretend it is an enjoyable fully-immersive musical experience.
I had an ex, and she loved old recordings like Viper Mad Blues and Cocaine Habit Blues, and the performances and songs were so good, but I could not listen to them as full-on music as she could. Maybe this is a lack of imagination on my part, maybe I am simply more discriminating in a good way, I am not to be the judge.
But I appreciate your post, it's something that has always been lurking at the back of my mind.
