pronounced, in a musical context, with the "h" sound--- even though the "h" is missing in the opera title. I've also heard Desdemona pronounced, again in a musical context, as DesDEmona.
It's all good. Just don't try and get an announcer/host to properly pronounce anything from the Portuguese...
